Adrift Tongariro

Join Adrift Tongariro for a private guided hike to the top of Mt Ruapehu, the highest of the three volcanoes in Tongariro National Park. This full-day adventure requires a good level of fitness and offers an unforgettable, personalized experience with friendly, knowledgeable guides who prioritize safety and fun. 


The hike starts from Whakapapa Ski Area, with an optional chairlift to Knoll Ridge Café, depending on the group's preference and lift availability. Lunch will be served at the summit, offering stunning views of the crater lake. Note that this is not a standard track, and the terrain can be unstable.


The tour includes a private guide, transport between Adrift Tongariro Base and the activity, lunch (vegetarian available upon request), and winter gear like crampons and ice axes, if needed. 


Tour Schedule:

- **Summer (1 October - 30 April)**: Meet at 10:00 am, return by 6:30 pm

- **Winter (1 May - 30 September)**: Meet at 7:30 am, return by 5:30 pm


A minimum of two participants is required for this private tour. Additional participants can join at the standard rate.


Private return transfers are available for an extra cost, with pickup from various locations, including Whakapapa Village, Turangi, Ohakune, and Taupo. 


Gear List:

- **Summer**: Water (1-2L), personal meds, sun protection, hiking boots, layers, and raincoat.

- **Winter**: Water (1-1.5L), personal meds, thermal clothing, hiking boots, waterproof gear, hat, and gloves.


Gear hire is available for items like boots, jackets, and backpacks. This hike covers 10 km (or 7 km if using the chairlift) and takes about 6-7 hours, requiring a good level of fitness. In winter, surface conditions may require crampons and ice axes, with instruction provided by your guide.
